Research Associate – Bioactive Peptides

The Research Associate will be working in the laboratory of Principal Investigator (PI) Dr. Jianping Wu in the Department of Agricultural, Food and Nutritional Science to advance the Bioactive Peptide Research program. In consultation with the PI, this incumbent will involve oversight of day to day lab functioning. This position aims to understand the potential of food protein-derived bioactive peptides on chronic disease prevention and their mechanisms of action. The incumbent will work closely with the PI and his collaborators to demonstrate the potential uses of bioactive peptides as natural health products and functional foods for the prevention and treatment of chronic diseases.


  • Designs and performs high level, complex research activities under the direction of the PI
  • Plans research activities and sets research objectives in consultation with the PI
  • Works with a high degree of independence, and follows research directions developed by the PI
  • Develops and performs lab experiments, troubleshoots experimental protocols, and adjusts methodology to attain desired results
  • Contributes to the research program by investigating, and establishing new methods and experiments for program advancement
  • Carries out data analysis and prepares research project reports
  • Writes first draft of manuscripts and provides assistance with grant application preparation
  • Prepares abstracts, research reports, and presentations under the direction of the PI
  • Present research results at laboratory meetings, scientific conferences and other related events
  • Provides guidance, training and oversight of research personnel, including summer students, graduate students, postdoctoral fellows and visiting scientists
  • Maintains laboratory instruments, and helps to foster a safe working environment
  • Performs other related administrative duties as required


  • PhD degree in Biochemistry, Nutrition, Physiology, Food Science, or related fields
  • High-level research skills in experimental design, data analysis and troubleshooting
  • In-depth knowledge in biochemistry, molecular biology, protein chemistry that can be applied for molecular mechanistic study of bioactive peptides in cells and animals
  • Extensive research knowledge in animal and cell models of metabolic syndrome and/or bone diseases
  • Experience and skills with animal study, cell tissue culture, protein and gene extraction, immunoblotting and PCR assays
  • Ability to collaborate and work in a team
  • Strong verbal and written skills for effective presentation and manuscript preparation
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Supervisory experience is an asset

In accordance with the Trust/Research Academic staff agreement this full time position has a term length of 2 years and offers a comprehensive benefits package found at Faculty & Staff Benefits  and an annual salary of $ 58,210.
